The first thing you do in Family Storybook Studio isn't make a story. It's introduce your family.

You add each person once — a photo or two, their name, their age. Your son. His baby sister. Grandma. The dog. From then on, they're a saved cast you can drop into any story without describing them all over again. Make a story tonight and your daughter is in it, looking like herself. Make one next week and she's still there, still herself.

A cast, not a form field

This is the part that makes the whole app work. A character isn't a name you typed — it's a person the illustrator actually knows how to draw. Add the grandparents and they can co-star in a story you send them. Add the new baby and your firstborn's next adventure has a little sister in it. Add the dog, because of course the dog is in the story.

Their age matters, too: it's what lets each story come out written for the kid it's for — a two-year-old's story and a seven-year-old's story are different animals, and the age on the character is how the app knows which one to write.

It becomes a record of who they are right now

Here's the part I didn't expect when we built it. Because your child stars in story after story, their character quietly becomes a record of a season of childhood. The pink fire station phase. The dinosaur months. The year everything was about outer space. You look back through the stories they starred in and you're really looking at who they were at three, at four, at five.

That's not a feature we designed so much as one that emerged. A personalized story is a nice night. A growing shelf of them is a record of a childhood.
